Bruno the Dog

Bruno's Cafe is named after Ernst and Mary Behrend's favorite dog, a German Shepherd. Ernst Behrend was a co-founder of the Hammermill Paper Company. His wife, Mary, donated the Glenhill Farm to Penn State in his memory in 1948. The oil portrait of the German Shepherd contributes to the sense that Bruno held a special place in Ernst's heart.

Bruno lived on the Glenhill Farm estate with Ernst and Mary Behrend. When he passed away, he was buried in what later became the Wilson Picnic Grove. A simple marker with the name BRUNO indicated the location. Unfortunately, digging the stone up and displaying it in the residence halls became an annual tradition at Penn State Behrend, so the stone was removed and is currently under lock and key.

Ernst Behrend had many dogs and cared deeply for all of them. Ernst's brother Otto was an award-winning breeder of Wolf Hounds. It's a good guess that he also showed dogs.

When Mary Behrend donated the farm to Penn State as a tribute to her late husband, she spoke of her memories of the estate, saying there were many long walks through the woods and many dogs. The South Cottage, located behind the Glenhill Farmhouse, was originally a dog kennel for the Behrends.

Food Services at Reed Building
1968 — The Reed Union Building was completed. The food service operation moves from the second floor of the Glenhill Farm House to the second floor of the new building. Reed Cafeteria is established and is the only food service on campus for residence hall and commuter students.

1972 — Dobbins Dining Hall is constructed, and the Reed Cafeteria becomes a "cash-;only" operation. Residence hall students eat their meals at Dobbins, using their meal plan.

1973 — A small kitchen fire, caused by a doughnut maker, occurs in June. Minimal smoke damage occurs.

1978 — Reed Cafeteria is remodeled to include modular booths in the dining area and is renamed "The Gorge".

1985 — Housing and Food Services introduces the electronic meal plan card access system to Dobbins and Reed Cafeteria. This innovative concept uses a student's id card for payment, and deducts purchases from the student's account. Residence hall students can now use meal points to purchase food at The Gorge.

1988 — The Gorge is renamed the Wintergreen Cafe. The Reed Union Building is expanded to include the Penn State Bookstore. Deteriorating booths are replaced with new dining room furniture. A convenience store is established within the Wintergreen Cafe to sell canned foods, medicine, cereal, snacks, and personal hygiene products.

1990 — The convenience store is discontinued and a made-to-order deli is created.

1995 — The deli station is expanded and moved to the dining area. The salad bar is also expanded in the area where the deli was located. The beverage island is removed to open the scramble space, and make ordering hot food easier.

1997 — The operation is remodeled, and Bruno's Cafe opens in fall. Students now have a facility that offers an expanded multi-media stage, coffee shop, open servery, and a spectacular new dining area with multi level seating, regional sound and light controls, and a wide open, flowing atmosphere.
