Supplemental housing rooms are located on regular residence hall floors and are sized and specially furnished to accommodate a larger number of students.
More and more returning students are requesting to live on campus—and supplemental housing allows us to accommodate as many students as possible.
Amenities
Supplemental housing amenities are the same as those found in all residence hall rooms. A telephone connection, beds, desks, chests of drawers, hanging space for clothes, a refrigerator/freezer/microwave unit, drapes, etc. are provided for your use. An individual Internet connection is provided for each student. All supplemental housing rooms have doors that lock and only the students assigned to the room can gain access through the locks.
Assigned Students
All types of students are assigned to supplemental housing, so that they have an opportunity to live on campus. First-year students, returning students, and students from other Penn State campuses are offered supplemental space after regular rooms are filled.
Some students are offered a supplemental contract, regardless of regular space availability. If you are a Penn State student who currently lives off campus and wants to live on campus, are returning from a leave of absence, or want to live on campus but have withdrawn and reenrolled at the University, you will automatically be assigned to supplemental housing. Transfer students and all upperclass students who did not apply for housing through the eLiving Housing Contract System will be assigned to regular space in the order in which their contracts were received and after students who did enter the process.
Moving to Regular Space
Several factors are considered when reassigning students in supplemental housing to regular rooms.
First-year students are first ordered by the date their acceptance fees were received. As cancellations in regular rooms occur, the age and major of the regular room occupant and the location of the room are compared to first-year students living in supplemental housing. The student with the earliest file date who has a similar major and has either requested or lives in the area will be reassigned to the regular room. If a match is not found within the top few early filers, the new room will be assigned to the student who most closely fits the criteria.
Upperclass students in supplemental housing who applied for a Housing Contract through eLiving have first priority to be reassigned to regular rooms. These students will be reassigned in a random order created by eLiving. After all eLiving participants have been placed in regular rooms, and if space permits, upperclass students who received their Supplemental Housing Contracts through a contract exchange will be reassigned to regular rooms based on the date their contracts were received. Both the location of the vacancy and the semester standing of the student currently in the room will be considered when reassigning upperclass students.
First-year students will be reassigned with other first-year students when they are moved to regular rooms.
If you are reassigned to a regular room, moving instructions will be provided with your new housing assignment. If your new room is in a different building within your area or in a different housing area, you can contact Housing staff to make an appointment for assistance in moving your packed belongings to your new location. Assistance is provided during regular work hours and must be scheduled in advance. Call the phone number provided in your moving instructions to make arrangements.
Room Rates
The room rate for supplemental housing is less than most room rates. When a student moves to a regular room, the cost will be prorated according to the new room rate.
