Moving Out

Everyone living in a residence hall room is responsible for the condition of that room at the time of check-out. It is important for roommates to develop a plan together for cleaning and getting the room back to its original move-in state. Arrangements must be made with Housing before finals, to collect anything left in storage. There is NO storage available for students who will be returning for the fall semester. All undergraduate students must check out and depart from the residence halls by 4:00 p.m. the day following their final examination.

To avoiding charges for damages and additional clean-up, please follow these move-out instructions:
  1. Ceiling/doors/walls/windows
    • Remove all decorations, stickers, and tape/sticky putty from the ceiling, doors, walls, and windows.

    • Clean both sides of your entrance door and your closet doors.

    • Close and lock windows and keep the curtains open.

  2. Refrigerator/Microwave unit
    • Clean the entire unit inside and out.

    • Defrost refrigerator, but make sure to keep the unit plugged in and turned ON.

  3. Room
    • Remove all personal belongings from your room (carpet/clothes/etc.).

    • Clean closets, dressers, and desks (inside drawers).

    • Sweep the floor.

    • Empty wastebaskets.

    • All Penn State room items placed in storage must be returned to your room—bed frames (assembled) and mattresses, desk chairs, desk lamps, etc.

    • All original furniture must be in place in the room—bolsters must be properly installed on the walls, mattresses must be on bed frames, and bed pads left on beds.

  4. Check-out form/room inspection
    • If you’re the first roommate who leaves at the end of the semester, please sign your name, indicate which side of the room you occupied, and date it on line A of the check-out form. Then complete the checklist items (listed above) for your side of the room.

    • If you’re the last roommate who leaves for the end of the semester, you should inspect the room for these checklist items. A checkmark should be placed beside each item as it is completed.

      • The last roommate to leave the room prior to the end of the semester MUST check-out with your housekeeper, Resident Assistant (RA), or duty RA (Housekeeper/RA must sign and date on line C of the check-out form after the room is inspected).

      • The last roommate must sign, indicate which side of the room he/she occupied, and date it on line B of the check-out form. Give the completed form to the resident assistant who is completing your inspection.

  5. Bathroom and common spaces (for suites)
    • Remove all personal belongings.

    • Clean drawers.

    • Sweep the floor.

    • Empty wastebaskets.

When you are ready to check out:
    • Turn off all lights

    • Lock and secure your door.

    • Take all trash to the janitors closet or dumpster—do not leave trash in the hallways.

    • Return room key (in the envelope provided in your mailbox) and check-out form with a forwarding address to the Commons Desk or place in the key depository at your Commons Desk. It is important that you DO NOT place your key in the U.S. mail slot, leave it with a friend, or leave it in your room! Room keys not returned to the Commons Desk within 24 hours after student's last final exam will be replaced. A new core lock will be installed and charges will be assessed against the student account. Please check with Housing or your RA if you have any questions regarding check out.
NOTE: Any charges incurred from damages or cleaning, will be assessed by Housing after check out.
