Direct Room Exchange
To process a Direct Room Exchange, you must first find a student who is willing to switch rooms with you. (To view a list of students who are interested in switching rooms, log on to the eLiving Housing Contract System and click on “Room Switch eBoard”.) Students assigned to Special Living Options (SLOs) or sororities may only switch rooms with another student in the same SLO or sorority.
Both you and the student you are switching with must have active Housing Contracts and regular room assignments, and you must both complete the Direct Room Exchange form. Although only the two students who are actually moving to different rooms need to complete the Direct Room Exchange form, the students’ roommates will be affected and should be consulted.
Submitting Your Form
Choose one of the following options to submit your form:
- Mail the signed form to The Assignment Office for Campus Residences, 201 Johnston Commons, University Park, PA, 16802. You must include a photocopy of your Penn State id+ Card.*
- Fax the signed form and a photocopy of your Penn State id+ Card* to 814-863-8364.
- E-mail the form to assignmentoffice@psu.edu. You must e-mail the form from your Penn State e-mail account.
What Happens After You Submit Your Form
When both students have completed and returned their portions of the Direct Room Exchange form, the Assignment Office will process the exchange. You can check eLiving for confirmation that the change has been processed.
If a Direct Room Exchange is requested and processed after the students have checked into the rooms that they were originally assigned, the students must complete the move within four days and must follow the instructions that will be provided to properly check out of their old rooms and check into their new rooms.

Transgender, gender variant or other gendered:
Penn State is committed to assisting all individuals in identifying residence hall space that is welcoming. If you identify as transgender, gender variant or other gendered, please contact one of the staff identified below. We are very interested in discussing any questions you may have about on-campus housing. First year students seeking this assistance should contact us as soon as they accept their offer of admission. Change of Campus and Transfer students should contact us after accepting a housing contract to discuss the options that might be available and room assignment preferences.
It is important to call to discuss options prior to March 1 for upper class students, or May 15 for first year students, when the widest range of options are still available. We look forward to welcoming you to Penn State.
